The Fire Department was established in 1940 on the grounds of the Hianloland Farm (W. Alton Jones Campus of URI)to aid in fire control in the western half of the town of West Greenwich. Station #1 (built in 1961) now houses an Engine, Tanker and Utility pickup. A new three bay addition is complete. Plans are under way to renovate the old building so that space will be available for the community, training, and offices. Station #2 was built at the western edge of town housing an engine, brush truck, tanker/engine, and a rescue. A maintenance garage is being built that will also house a command unit for search and confined space rescue. The Department has a roll of around 20 active firefighters, 10 rescue personnel (some do both), and 25-30 regular and associate members. The department is active in the community running chowders, arts and craft fair, and other community projects. Training is on going and kept up to date for both fire and rescue person
The patch design was the winner of a contest run at the fire station (winning design by Paul W. Sweet). The design depicts a farm scene with rolling hi and low hills on a field of blue. The scene is to remind us of our origin although rural in nature we try to maintain an up to date department. The orange setting sun (west) and the hour glass (Greenwich Mean Time) are the symbols of the town of West Greenwich. Some patches have the name Explorer and 911 added for the BSA post sponsored by the department. The post is currently inactive but hopes are that it may get started again. The department also sponsors Troop 35 BSA and Cub Pack 7. |
